Cronos Group Inc.'s (TSE:CRON) P/S Is Still On The Mark Following 29% Share Price Bounce
The Cronos Group Inc. (TSE:CRON) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 29%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 34%.
Since its price has surged higher, you could be forgiven for thinking Cronos Group is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 11.5x, considering almost half the companies in Canada's Pharmaceuticals industry have P/S ratios below 1.4x. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Cronos Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
Cronos Group could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Cronos Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 87% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been great for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 16% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 9.8% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Cronos Group's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
Shares in Cronos Group have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our look into Cronos Group shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
