Examining Cashflow Against Robex Resources' Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Over the twelve months to March 2021, Robex Resources recorded an accrual ratio of 0.28. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In fact, it had free cash flow of CA$23m in the last year, which was a lot less than its statutory profit of CA$44.7m. Robex Resources shareholders will no doubt be hoping that its free cash flow bounces back next year, since it was down over the last twelve months. One positive for Robex Resources shareholders is that it's accrual ratio was significantly better last year, providing reason to believe that it may return to stronger cash conversion in the future. As a result, some shareholders may be looking for stronger cash conversion in the current year.

Our Take On Robex Resources' Profit Performance

Robex Resources didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Because of this, we think that it may be that Robex Resources' statutory profits are better than its underlying earnings power. But on the bright side, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. Razors, glasses, mattresses, all toppled by direct-to-consumer upstarts. Beer wasn't. A 90-year-old law is why.

Forget beer. Wine volume is down the drain and it has direct-to-consumer shipping in most states. The category with the freest distribution is falling fastest.

Funny. Beer sales aren't growing anymore. A toll booth in a shrinking market may not be a great choice to invest.
