We Think Perimeter Medical Imaging AI (CVE:PINK) Needs To Drive Business Growth Carefully
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Perimeter Medical Imaging AI (CVE:PINK) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might Perimeter Medical Imaging AI Run Out Of Money?
You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. Perimeter Medical Imaging AI has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the CA$24m in cash it held at March 2023. In the last year, its cash burn was CA$18m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 16 months from March 2023. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.
How Is Perimeter Medical Imaging AI's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Although Perimeter Medical Imaging AI had revenue of CA$602k in the last twelve months, its operating revenue was only CA$243k in that time period. Given how low that operating leverage is, we think it's too early to put much weight on the revenue growth, so we'll focus on how the cash burn is changing, instead. During the last twelve months, its cash burn actually ramped up 72%. While this spending increase is no doubt intended to drive growth, if the trend continues the company's cash runway will shrink very quickly. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Hard Would It Be For Perimeter Medical Imaging AI To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While Perimeter Medical Imaging AI does have a solid cash runway, its cash burn trajectory may have some shareholders thinking ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
Perimeter Medical Imaging AI's cash burn of CA$18m is about 18% of its CA$100m market capitalisation. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
So, Should We Worry About Perimeter Medical Imaging AI's Cash Burn?
Even though its increasing cash burn makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Perimeter Medical Imaging AI's cash runway was relatively promising. Even though we don't think it has a problem with its cash burn, the analysis we've done in this article does suggest that shareholders should give some careful thought to the potential cost of raising more money in the future.
