Companies Like Fokus Mining (CVE:FKM) Are In A Position To Invest In Growth

There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. By way of example, Fokus Mining (CVE:FKM) has seen its share price rise 325% over the last year, delighting many shareholders. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.

So notwithstanding the buoyant share price, we think it's well worth asking whether Fokus Mining's cash burn is too risky. For the purpose of this article, we'll define cash burn as the amount of cash the company is spending each year to fund its growth (also called its negative free cash flow). First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

Does Fokus Mining Have A Long Cash Runway?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Fokus Mining last reported its March 2025 balance sheet in May 2025, it had zero debt and cash worth CA$1.9m. Importantly, its cash burn was CA$1.4m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of around 16 months as of March 2025. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. The image below shows how its cash balance has been changing over the last few years.

How Is Fokus Mining's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Because Fokus Mining isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. Nonetheless, we can still examine its cash burn trajectory as part of our assessment of its cash burn situation. With cash burn dropping by 15% it seems management feel the company is spending enough to advance its business plans at an appropriate pace. Fokus Mining makes us a little nervous due to its lack of substantial operating revenue. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.

How Easily Can Fokus Mining Raise Cash?

Even though it has reduced its cash burn recently, shareholders should still consider how easy it would be for Fokus Mining to raise more cash in the future. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Fokus Mining has a market capitalisation of CA$28m and burnt through CA$1.4m last year, which is 4.9% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

So, Should We Worry About Fokus Mining's Cash Burn?

The good news is that in our view Fokus Mining's cash burn situation gives shareholders real reason for optimism. Not only was its cash burn reduction quite good, but its cash burn relative to its market cap was a real positive. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn. On another note, we conducted an in-depth investigation of the company, and identified 3 warning signs for Fokus Mining (2 are a bit unpleasant!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
