We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell Cabral Gold Inc. (CVE:CBR), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

Cabral Gold Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The President, Alan H. Carter, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$335k worth of shares at a price of CA$0.52 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (CA$0.78). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 5.2% of Alan H. Carter's holding. Notably Alan H. Carter was also the biggest buyer, having purchased CA$533k worth of shares.
In total, Cabral Gold insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The average sell price was around CA$0.60. It's not particularly great to see insiders were selling shares at below recent prices. Of course, the sales could be motivated for a multitude of reasons, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Cabral Gold Insiders Are Selling The Stock
We have seen a bit of insider selling at Cabral Gold, over the last three months. In total, insiders sold CA$376k worth of shares in that time. But the good news is that President Alan H. Carter bought CA$333k worth. While it's not great to see insider selling, the net amount sold isn't enough for us to want to read anything into it.
Insider Ownership
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Cabral Gold insiders own about CA$16m worth of shares. That equates to 16% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
