Should You Be Adding Winpak (TSE:WPK) To Your Watchlist Today?

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Winpak (TSE:WPK). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Winpak's Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, Winpak has grown EPS by 11% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. While Winpak may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. Suffice it to say that is not a great sign of growth.

Are Winpak Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. Because often, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.

We note that Winpak insiders spent US$229k on stock, over the last year; in contrast, we didn't see any selling. That paints the company in a nice light, as it signals that its leaders are feeling confident in where the company is heading. It is also worth noting that it was Chief Operational Excellence Randall Troutman who made the biggest single purchase, worth CA$103k, paying CA$41.38 per share.

Recent insider purchases of Winpak stock is not the only way management has kept the interests of the general public shareholders in mind. Namely, Winpak has a very reasonable level of CEO pay. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Winpak with market caps between US$1.0b and US$3.2b is about US$2.2m.

Winpak offered total compensation worth US$1.5m to its CEO in the year to December 2023. That comes in below the average for similar sized companies and seems pretty reasonable. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Should You Add Winpak To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Winpak is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. And there's more to love too, with modest CEO remuneration and insider buying interest continuing the positives for the company. The sum of all that, points to a quality business, and a genuine prospect for further research. Now, you could try to make up your mind on Winpak by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
