The Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TSE:TXG) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 67% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Torex Gold Resources' P/E ratio of 16x, since the median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio in Canada is also close to 15x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Torex Gold Resources has been very sluggish. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to revert back to market averages soon, which has kept the P/E from falling. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping it doesn't keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

How Is Torex Gold Resources' Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Torex Gold Resources would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 52%. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 61% overall. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 17% each year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.0% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Torex Gold Resources is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Torex Gold Resources' P/E

Torex Gold Resources appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Torex Gold Resources currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
