Here's Why We Think CCL Industries (TSE:CCL.B) Is Well Worth Watching
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like CCL Industries (TSE:CCL.B), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is CCL Industries Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. CCL Industries managed to grow EPS by 4.1% per year, over three years. That might not be particularly high growth, but it does show that per-share earnings are moving steadily in the right direction.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While we note CCL Industries's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 8.2% to CA$5.6b. That's progress.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for CCL Industries.
Are CCL Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a CA$12b company like CCL Industries. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at CA$120m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like CCL Industries, with market caps over CA$10b, is about CA$7.3m.
The CCL Industries CEO received CA$5.7m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Does CCL Industries Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of CCL Industries is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main game for CCL Industries, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, I'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. Now, you could try to make up your mind on CCL Industries by focusing on just these factors, or you could also consider how its price-to-earnings ratio compares to other companies in its industry.
Although CCL Industries certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
