Revenues Not Telling The Story For First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSE:AG) After Shares Rise 38%

Published
TSX:AG

Those holding First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSE:AG) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 38% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Looking further back, the 21% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that First Majestic Silver's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 3.8x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Metals and Mining industry in Canada, where the median P/S ratio is around 3.4x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does First Majestic Silver's Recent Performance Look Like?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, First Majestic Silver's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like First Majestic Silver's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 16%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in revenue being achieved in total. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 4.8% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 20% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this information, we find it interesting that First Majestic Silver is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does First Majestic Silver's P/S Mean For Investors?

Its shares have lifted substantially and now First Majestic Silver's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

When you consider that First Majestic Silver's revenue growth estimates are fairly muted compared to the broader industry, it's easy to see why we consider it unexpected to be trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for First Majestic Silver (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
