Potential Upside For Opsens Inc. (TSE:OPS) Not Without Risk

You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.3x Opsens Inc. (TSE:OPS) is definitely a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Medical Equipment companies in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 18.9x and even P/S above 85x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Opsens Performed Recently?

Opsens could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Opsens' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Opsens' to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 20%. As a result, it also grew revenue by 30% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 33% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 10% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Opsens is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

To us, it seems Opsens currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. When we see strong growth forecasts like this, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/S ratio. While the possibility of the share price plunging seems unlikely due to the high growth forecasted for the company, the market does appear to have some hesitation.
