Topaz Energy's (TSE:TPZ) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
Topaz Energy Corp. (TSE:TPZ) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 30th of September to CA$0.28. The payment will take the dividend yield to 5.2%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Topaz Energy Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 162% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 31%. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Earnings per share is forecast to rise by 86.3% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 98%, which probably can't continue without putting some pressure on the balance sheet.
Topaz Energy Is Still Building Its Track Record
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was CA$0.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CA$1.12. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 18% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
Topaz Energy Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. We are encouraged to see that Topaz Energy has grown earnings per share at 63% per year over the past five years. Although earnings per share is up nicely Topaz Energy is paying out 162% of its earnings as dividends, which we feel is borderline unsustainable without extenuating circumstances.
We should note that Topaz Energy has issued stock equal to 12% of shares outstanding. Trying to grow the dividend when issuing new shares reminds us of the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus - perpetually pushing a boulder uphill. Companies that consistently issue new shares are often suboptimal from a dividend perspective.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Topaz Energy will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
