The board of Topaz Energy Corp. (TSE:TPZ) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of CA$0.30 on the 30th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 5.1%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Topaz Energy's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Before making this announcement, Topaz Energy's dividend was higher than its profits, but the free cash flows quite comfortably covered it. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
EPS is set to grow by 83.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 89%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
Topaz Energy Is Still Building Its Track Record
The dividend hasn't seen any major cuts in the past, but the company has only been paying a dividend for 2 years, which isn't that long in the grand scheme of things. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was CA$0.80, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CA$1.20. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 22% per annum over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.
Dividend Growth Could Be Constrained
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Topaz Energy has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 69% per annum. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.
Our Thoughts On Topaz Energy's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
