While shareholders of Tenaz Energy (TSE:TNZ) are in the red over the last five years, underlying earnings have actually grown

It is a pleasure to report that the Tenaz Energy Corp. (TSE:TNZ) is up 57% in the last quarter. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. In fact, the share price is down 32%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

While the share price declined over five years, Tenaz Energy actually managed to increase EPS by an average of 6.6% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Because of the sharp contrast between the EPS growth rate and the share price growth, we're inclined to look to other metrics to understand the changing market sentiment around the stock.

The revenue fall of 0.3% per year for five years is neither good nor terrible. But if the market expected durable top line growth, then that could explain the share price weakness.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Tenaz Energy shareholders are down 2.0% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 0.8%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 6% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Tenaz Energy better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Tenaz Energy (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
