Fairfax India Holdings' (TSE:FIH.U) investors will be pleased with their stellar 157% return over the last five years
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. For example, the Fairfax India Holdings Corporation (TSE:FIH.U) share price has soared 157% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. We note the stock price is up 2.2% in the last seven days.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Fairfax India Holdings' earnings per share are down 30% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
The revenue reduction of 17% per year is not a positive. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. A Different Perspective
Fairfax India Holdings' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 22%. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 21%. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Fairfax India Holdings you should be aware of, and 1 of them can't be ignored.
