CI Financial Corp.'s (TSE:CIX) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Capital Markets industry in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2x and even P/S above 12x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does CI Financial's Recent Performance Look Like?

Recent times have been pleasing for CI Financial as its revenue has risen in spite of the industry's average revenue going into reverse. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the industry, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on CI Financial will be hoping that this isn't the case and the company continues to beat out the industry.

Keen to find out how analysts think CI Financial's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

CI Financial's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 11% gain to the company's revenues. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 49% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 1.6% per year over the next three years. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 6.5% each year.

In light of this, it's understandable that CI Financial's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What We Can Learn From CI Financial's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's clear to see that CI Financial maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, CI Financial's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

Having said that, be aware CI Financial is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is significant.
