FansUnite Entertainment Inc. (TSE:FANS) Surges 38% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

The FansUnite Entertainment Inc. (TSE:FANS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 38%. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 10.0% isn't as attractive.

Even after such a large jump in price, FansUnite Entertainment may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x, considering almost half of all companies in the Hospitality industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 7x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does FansUnite Entertainment's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Revenue has risen firmly for FansUnite Entertainment recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on FansUnite Entertainment will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, FansUnite Entertainment would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 14% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, even though the last 12 month performance was only fair. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 207% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that FansUnite Entertainment's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On FansUnite Entertainment's P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift FansUnite Entertainment's P/S close to the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of FansUnite Entertainment confirms that the company's revenue trends over the past three-year years are a key factor in its low price-to-sales ratio, as we suspected, given they fall short of current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
