Telefônica Brasil (BVMF:VIVT3) Is Increasing Its Dividend To R$0.497
The board of Telefônica Brasil S.A. (BVMF:VIVT3) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of R$0.497 on the 18th of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. The payment will take the dividend yield to 4.3%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Telefônica Brasil's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, Telefônica Brasil's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 50.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 60% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was R$2.84 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was R$1.66. This works out to be a decline of approximately 5.2% per year over that time. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. Telefônica Brasil has seen earnings per share falling at 2.1% per year over the last five years. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Telefônica Brasil's payments are rock solid. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
