Here's Why We Think CSU Cardsystem (BVMF:CARD3) Is Well Worth Watching

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in CSU Cardsystem (BVMF:CARD3). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is CSU Cardsystem Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. Like a wedge-tailed eagle on the wind, CSU Cardsystem's EPS soared from R$0.77 to R$1.23, in just one year. That's a commendable gain of 59%.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). CSU Cardsystem shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 12% to 16%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

CSU Cardsystem isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of R$787m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are CSU Cardsystem Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that CSU Cardsystem insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 56% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. With that sort of holding, insiders have about R$438m riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Does CSU Cardsystem Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, CSU Cardsystem's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with CSU Cardsystem .
