Here's Why Multiplan Empreendimentos Imobiliários (BVMF:MULT3) Can Manage Its Debt Responsibly

When we think about how risky a company is, we always like to look at its use of debt, since debt overload can lead to ruin. We note that Multiplan Empreendimentos Imobiliários S.A. (BVMF:MULT3) does have debt on its balance sheet. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. How Healthy Is Multiplan Empreendimentos Imobiliários's Balance Sheet?

Zooming in on the latest balance sheet data, we can see that Multiplan Empreendimentos Imobiliários had liabilities of R$974.0m due within 12 months and liabilities of R$3.75b due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of R$1.77b and R$550.3m worth of receivables due within a year. So it has liabilities totalling R$2.41b more than its cash and near-term receivables, combined.

Having said that, the load is sufficiently heavy that we would recommend any shareholders keep a close eye on it. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt.
