It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Marfrig Global Foods (BVMF:MRFG3). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Marfrig Global Foods Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Marfrig Global Foods's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Marfrig Global Foods's EPS shot from R$3.16 to R$7.11, over the last year. You don't see 125% year-on-year growth like that, very often. That could be a sign that the business has reached a true inflection point.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note Marfrig Global Foods's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 26% to R$80b. That's a real positive.

Are Marfrig Global Foods Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Marfrig Global Foods shares worth a considerable sum. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth R$1.1b. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Does Marfrig Global Foods Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Marfrig Global Foods's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering Marfrig Global Foods for a spot on your watchlist. Even so, be aware that Marfrig Global Foods is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit concerning...
