The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From Camil Alimentos S.A.'s (BVMF:CAML3) Earnings Yet As Shares Tumble 27%

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Camil Alimentos S.A. (BVMF:CAML3) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 59% share price decline.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, given about half the companies in Brazil have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 8x, you may still consider Camil Alimentos as a highly attractive investment with its 3.5x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Camil Alimentos as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Camil Alimentos would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 66% gain to the company's bottom line. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 11% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 13% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that Camil Alimentos is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

What We Can Learn From Camil Alimentos' P/E?

Camil Alimentos' P/E looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Camil Alimentos maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Camil Alimentos (2 shouldn't be ignored!) that you need to be mindful of.
