Prio's (BVMF:PRIO3) 49% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same five-year period
Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Don't believe it? Then look at the Prio S.A. (BVMF:PRIO3) share price. It's 626% higher than it was five years ago. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. And in the last week the share price has popped 3.0%. But this could be related to the buoyant market which is up about 2.7% in a week. It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, Prio achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 95% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 49% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company. The reasonably low P/E ratio of 6.92 also suggests market apprehension.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It is of course excellent to see how Prio has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.
A Different Perspective
Prio shareholders are down 4.0% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 3.7%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 49%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how Prio scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
