What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at Cosan (BVMF:CSAN3), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Cosan, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.063 = R$7.6b ÷ (R$138b - R$17b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
Thus, Cosan has an ROCE of 6.3%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Oil and Gas industry average of 16%.

So How Is Cosan's ROCE Trending?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Cosan, we didn't gain much confidence. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 6.3% from 8.5% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Bottom Line
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Cosan is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 143% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we would look further into this stock to make sure the other metrics justify the positive view.
