Increasing losses over three years doesn't faze Anima Holding (BVMF:ANIM3) investors as stock surges 12% this past week
This month, we saw the Anima Holding S.A. (BVMF:ANIM3) up an impressive 57%. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Indeed, the share price is down a tragic 51% in the last three years. So it is really good to see an improvement. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.
On a more encouraging note the company has added R$155m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

SWOT Analysis for Anima Holding
- No major strengths identified for ANIM3.
- Interest payments on debt are not well covered.
- Has sufficient cash runway for more than 3 years based on current free cash flows.
- Good value based on P/S ratio and estimated fair value.
- Debt is not well covered by operating cash flow.
- Not expected to become profitable over the next 3 years.
Because Anima Holding made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
Over three years, Anima Holding grew revenue at 42% per year. That is faster than most pre-profit companies. The share price has moved in quite the opposite direction, down 15% over that time, a bad result. It seems likely that the market is worried about the continual losses. When we see revenue growth, paired with a falling share price, we can't help wonder if there is an opportunity for those who are willing to dig deeper.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 11% in the last year, Anima Holding shareholders lost 23%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
