Chimimport AD (BUL:CHIM) Shares Fly 27% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

Chimimport AD (BUL:CHIM) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 4.7% isn't as impressive.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in Bulgaria have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 12x, you may still consider Chimimport AD as a highly attractive investment with its 4x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Chimimport AD's earnings have been unimpressive. It might be that many expect the uninspiring earnings performance to worsen, which has repressed the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Chimimport AD's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as Chimimport AD's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings, the company posted a result that saw barely any deviation from a year ago. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by 11% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 12% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that Chimimport AD's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Key Takeaway

Shares in Chimimport AD are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As we suspected, our examination of Chimimport AD revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
