Fountain S.A.'s (EBR:FOU) Shares Leap 27% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story
Fountain S.A. (EBR:FOU) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 20% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Fountain's P/S ratio of 0.3x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Commercial Services industry in Belgium is also close to 0.7x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Fountain Has Been Performing
Revenue has risen firmly for Fountain recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders probably aren't too pessimistic about the future direction of the share price.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Fountain, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?
Fountain's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 18% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 59% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 13% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Fountain's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Fountain's P/S?
Fountain appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Fountain currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we can only assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
Having said that, be aware Fountain is showing 4 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 2 of those shouldn't be ignored.
