It's Down 36% But Gratifii Limited (ASX:GTI) Could Be Riskier Than It Looks

Gratifii Limited (ASX:GTI) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 36% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 56% share price decline.

After such a large drop in price, Gratifii may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 2.6x and even P/S higher than 7x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Gratifii Performed Recently?

Recent times have been advantageous for Gratifii as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the share price, and thus the P/S ratio. If the company manages to stay the course, then investors should be rewarded with a share price that matches its revenue figures.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Gratifii's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 53% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have been over the moon with those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 71% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 22%, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Gratifii's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What Does Gratifii's P/S Mean For Investors?

Gratifii's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

To us, it seems Gratifii currently trades on a significantly depressed P/S given its forecasted revenue growth is higher than the rest of its industry. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future revenues could see a lot of volatility.
