Althea Group Holdings Limited (ASX:AGH) Shares Fly 28% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

Althea Group Holdings Limited (ASX:AGH) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. But the last month did very little to improve the 69% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Althea Group Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Pharmaceuticals industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 8.3x and even P/S above 28x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has Althea Group Holdings Performed Recently?

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Althea Group Holdings as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Althea Group Holdings' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Althea Group Holdings' to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 45%. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 309% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why Althea Group Holdings is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Althea Group Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in Althea Group Holdings have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

In line with expectations, Althea Group Holdings maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
