Metro Mining (ASX:MMI) pulls back 13% this week, but still delivers shareholders stellar 133% return over 1 year
It's been a soft week for Metro Mining Limited (ASX:MMI) shares, which are down 13%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been very strong. During that period, the share price soared a full 133%. So some might not be surprised to see the price retrace some. The real question is whether the business is trending in the right direction.
In light of the stock dropping 13% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive one-year return.

Given that Metro Mining didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In the last year Metro Mining saw its revenue grow by 44%. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. While that revenue growth is pretty good the share price performance outshone it, with a lift of 133% as mentioned above. If the profitability is on the horizon then now could be a very exciting time to be a shareholder. Of course, we are always cautious about succumbing to 'fear of missing out' when a stock has shot up strongly.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Metro Mining shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 133% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 8% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Metro Mining (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
