Incitec Pivot (ASX:IPL) Is Increasing Its Dividend To A$0.17
Incitec Pivot Limited (ASX:IPL) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 21st of December to A$0.17. This will take the annual payment to 8.7% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Incitec Pivot Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, Incitec Pivot's dividend was only 52% of earnings, however it was paying out 100% of free cash flows. The company might be more focused on returning cash to shareholders, but paying out this much of its cash flow could expose the dividend to being cut in the future.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 46.5%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach 103%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was A$0.115, compared to the most recent full-year payment of A$0.34. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. We are encouraged to see that Incitec Pivot has grown earnings per share at 23% per year over the past five years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Incitec Pivot could prove to be a strong dividend payer.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Incitec Pivot's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
