Little Excitement Around Aurelia Metals Limited's (ASX:AMI) Revenues

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1x Aurelia Metals Limited (ASX:AMI) may be sending very bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Metals and Mining companies in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 78.6x and even P/S higher than 476x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Aurelia Metals Performed Recently?

Aurelia Metals hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

Keen to find out how analysts think Aurelia Metals' future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Aurelia Metals?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Aurelia Metals would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 18% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 14% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 2.8% as estimated by the four analysts watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 41%.

In light of this, it's understandable that Aurelia Metals' P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Aurelia Metals' P/S?

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Aurelia Metals' P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
