Lacklustre Performance Is Driving Beamtree Holdings Limited's (ASX:BMT) 27% Price Drop
The Beamtree Holdings Limited (ASX:BMT) share price has softened a substantial 27% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 15% in the last year.
Since its price has dipped substantially, Beamtree Holdings' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x might make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Healthcare Services industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 10.2x and even P/S above 22x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Beamtree Holdings Has Been Performing
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Beamtree Holdings has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Beamtree Holdings' to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's top line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 229% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 28% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 32% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
In light of this, it's understandable that Beamtree Holdings' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does Beamtree Holdings' P/S Mean For Investors?
Shares in Beamtree Holdings have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of Beamtree Holdings' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
