Katana Capital's Distributions May Be Difficult To Sustain

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Katana Capital is not generating a profit, but its free cash flows easily cover the dividend, leaving plenty for reinvestment in the business. In general, cash flows are more important than the more traditional measures of profit so we feel pretty comfortable with the dividend at this level.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 15.6% if recent trends continue. We like to see the company moving towards profitability, but this probably won't be enough for it to post positive net income this year. However, the positive cash flow ratio gives us some comfort about the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was A$0.04 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was A$0.02. The dividend has shrunk at around 6.7% a year during that period. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.

The Company Could Face Some Challenges Growing The Dividend

With a relatively unstable dividend, and a poor history of shrinking dividends, it's even more important to see if EPS is growing. Katana Capital has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 16% per annum. It's not an ideal situation that the company isn't turning a profit but the growth recently is a positive sign. All is not lost, but the future of the dividend definitely rests upon the company's ability to become profitable soon.

In Summary

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Katana Capital's payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
