Market Participants Recognise Findi Limited's (ASX:FND) Earnings Pushing Shares 29% Higher
Findi Limited (ASX:FND) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. This latest share price bounce rounds out a remarkable 678% gain over the last twelve months.
Since its price has surged higher, Findi's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 72.3x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 19x and even P/E's below 11x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Recent times have been advantageous for Findi as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Findi would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 54% last year. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 44% per year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 18% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Findi's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Shares in Findi have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Findi's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Findi (1 shouldn't be ignored) you should be aware of.
