The past year for Cleanaway Waste Management (ASX:CWY) investors has not been profitable
The simplest way to benefit from a rising market is to buy an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the Cleanaway Waste Management Limited (ASX:CWY) share price is down 10% in the last year. That's well below the market return of 7.5%. Looking at the longer term, the stock is down 8.1% over three years. It's down 13% in about a quarter.
Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the unfortunate twelve months during which the Cleanaway Waste Management share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 0.07%. Of course, the situation might betray previous over-optimism about growth.
It seems quite likely that the market was expecting higher growth from the stock. But other metrics might shed some light on why the share price is down.
Revenue was fairly steady year on year, which isn't usually such a bad thing. But the share price might be lower because the market expected a meaningful improvement, and got none.
The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Cleanaway Waste Management the TSR over the last 1 year was -8.0%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Cleanaway Waste Management had a tough year, with a total loss of 8.0% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 7.5%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cleanaway Waste Management better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Cleanaway Waste Management you should know about.
