If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Brambles' (ASX:BXB) returns on capital, so let's have a look.

What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Brambles:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.21 = US$1.1b ÷ (US$7.6b - US$2.0b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).

Thus, Brambles has an ROCE of 21%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 6.0% earned by companies in a similar industry.

How Are Returns Trending?

Brambles has not disappointed with their ROCE growth. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 23% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So it's likely that the business is now reaping the full benefits of its past investments, since the capital employed hasn't changed considerably. The company is doing well in that sense, and it's worth investigating what the management team has planned for long term growth prospects.

Our Take On Brambles' ROCE

As discussed above, Brambles appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. Investors may not be impressed by the favorable underlying trends yet because over the last five years the stock has only returned 20% to shareholders. So exploring more about this stock could uncover a good opportunity, if the valuation and other metrics stack up.
