Here's Why I Think Steamships Trading (ASX:SST) Is An Interesting Stock
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Steamships Trading (ASX:SST). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Steamships Trading's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Steamships Trading's EPS has grown 32% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Steamships Trading's EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Steamships Trading isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of AU$293m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Steamships Trading Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own Steamships Trading shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they hold K59m worth of its stock. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. That amounts to 20% of the company, demonstrating a degree of high-level alignment with shareholders.
Is Steamships Trading Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Steamships Trading's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Steamships Trading has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is a bit unpleasant) we think you should know about.
Although Steamships Trading certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
