Returns Are Gaining Momentum At International Holding Company PJSC (ADX:IHC)
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in International Holding Company PJSC's (ADX:IHC) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for International Holding Company PJSC, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = د.إ4.6b ÷ (د.إ58b - د.إ25b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
Thus, International Holding Company PJSC has an ROCE of 14%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Food industry average of 9.5% it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?
The fact that International Holding Company PJSC is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. Shareholders would no doubt be pleased with this because the business was loss-making two years ago but is is now generating 14% on its capital. And unsurprisingly, like most companies trying to break into the black, International Holding Company PJSC is utilizing 2,101% more capital than it was two years ago. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 42% of its operations, which isn't ideal. And with current liabilities at those levels, that's pretty high.
The Key Takeaway
To the delight of most shareholders, International Holding Company PJSC has now broken into profitability. Since the stock has returned a staggering 276% to shareholders over the last year, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
