Agthia Group PJSC (ADX:AGTHIA) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 45% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, Agthia Group PJSC's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in the United Arab Emirates, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

Agthia Group PJSC could be doing better as it's been growing earnings less than most other companies lately. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Agthia Group PJSC's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Agthia Group PJSC would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 15% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 302% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 17% per annum as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 4.3% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Agthia Group PJSC's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

What We Can Learn From Agthia Group PJSC's P/E?

Shares in Agthia Group PJSC have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Agthia Group PJSC's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
