It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in EQT Holdings Limited (ASX:EQT).
What Is Insider Selling?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At EQT Holdings
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Non-Executive Director Catherine Robson bought AU$100k worth of shares at a price of AU$23.71 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of AU$25.65 per share to be enticing. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. Happily, the EQT Holdings insiders decided to buy shares at close to current prices.

Insiders at EQT Holdings Have Bought Stock Recently
Over the last three months, we've seen a bit of insider buying at EQT Holdings. Independent Director David Sedgwick shelled out AU$19k for shares in that time. It's good to see the insider buying, as well as the lack of recent sellers. However, in this case the amount invested recently is quite small.
Does EQT Holdings Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that EQT Holdings insiders own 3.5% of the company, worth about AU$18m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At EQT Holdings Tell Us?
We note a that there has been a bit of insider buying recently (but no selling). Overall the buying isn't worth writing home about. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. Overall we don't see anything to make us think EQT Holdings insiders are doubting the company, and they do own shares.
