Niu Technologies (NASDAQ:NIU) Stock Catapults 28% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Niu Technologies (NASDAQ:NIU) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 28% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 40% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, Niu Technologies may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Auto industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.9x and even P/S higher than 12x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Niu Technologies Performed Recently?

Niu Technologies could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this poor revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

How Is Niu Technologies' Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Niu Technologies would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 16% decrease to the company's top line. That put a dampener on the good run it was having over the longer-term as its three-year revenue growth is still a noteworthy 8.5% in total. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been mostly respectable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 10% per year during the coming three years according to the dual analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 20% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Niu Technologies' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Niu Technologies' P/S

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Niu Technologies' P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Niu Technologies maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
