Sea Harvest Group (JSE:SHG) Shareholders Have Enjoyed A 22% Share Price Gain
By buying an index fund, investors can approximate the average market return. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Sea Harvest Group Limited (JSE:SHG) share price is up 22% in the last three years, clearly besting the market decline of around 19% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 1.6% , including dividends .

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During three years of share price growth, Sea Harvest Group achieved compound earnings per share growth of 5.1% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 7% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. That's not necessarily surprising considering the three-year track record of earnings growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Sea Harvest Group, it has a TSR of 34% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Pleasingly, Sea Harvest Group's total shareholder return last year was 1.6%. That includes the value of the dividend. The TSR has been even better over three years, coming in at 10% per year. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
