KAL Group's (JSE:KAL) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of KAL Group Limited (JSE:KAL) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ZAR1.54 on the 16th of February, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 4.3%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that KAL Group's stock price has increased by 30% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

KAL Group's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. However, prior to this announcement, KAL Group's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 7.8% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 38% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

KAL Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

It's comforting to see that KAL Group has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. Since 2017, the annual payment back then was ZAR0.826, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ZAR2.10. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 12% a year over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.

We Could See KAL Group's Dividend Growing

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that KAL Group has been growing its earnings per share at 7.8% a year over the past five years. KAL Group definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.

In Summary

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. The payment isn't stellar, but it could make a decent addition to a dividend portfolio.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. As an example, we've identified 1 warning sign for KAL Group that you should be aware of before investing. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
