The Bidvest Group Limited (JSE:BVT) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of October to ZAR4.39. This takes the annual payment to 3.3% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Bidvest Group's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Bidvest Group's earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 39.5%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 35% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ZAR6.66 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of ZAR8.76. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 2.8% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.

Bidvest Group Could Grow Its Dividend

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Bidvest Group has been growing its earnings per share at 9.1% a year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.

We Really Like Bidvest Group's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Bidvest Group is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
