The board of Argent Industrial Limited (JSE:ART) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ZAR0.60 on the 22nd of July, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 5.4%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Argent Industrial's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, Argent Industrial's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 34.8% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 24% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ZAR0.14 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ZAR1.20. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 24% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Argent Industrial has impressed us by growing EPS at 35% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

Argent Industrial Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Argent Industrial is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
