This month, we saw the Finbond Group Limited (JSE:FGL) up an impressive 52%. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. After all, the share price is down 55% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

Finbond Group wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last half decade, Finbond Group saw its revenue increase by 25% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. Unfortunately for shareholders the share price has dropped 9% per year - disappointing considering the growth. This could mean high expectations have been tempered, potentially because investors are looking to the bottom line. If you think the company can keep up its revenue growth, you'd have to consider the possibility that there's an opportunity here.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Finbond Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for Finbond Group shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 48%, over the last 5 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Finbond Group had a tough year, with a total loss of 39%, against a market gain of about 12%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 8% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Finbond Group (1 is potentially serious) that you should be aware of.
