Unitil Corporation's (NYSE:UTL) Shareholders Might Be Looking For Exit

Unitil Corporation's (NYSE:UTL) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.2x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 17x and even P/E's below 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

There hasn't been much to differentiate Unitil's and the market's earnings growth lately. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this modest earnings performance will accelerate. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Unitil's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 3.9%. The latest three year period has also seen a 23% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the dual analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 5.3% over the next year. With the market predicted to deliver 14% growth , the company is positioned for a weaker earnings result.

In light of this, it's alarming that Unitil's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

The Bottom Line On Unitil's P/E

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Unitil's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 2 warning signs for Unitil you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.
