Pinnacle West Capital (NYSE:PNW) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Pinnacle West Capital Corporation (NYSE:PNW) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 2nd of December to $0.895, which will be 1.7% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $0.88. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 4.0%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Pinnacle West Capital's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. Prior to this announcement, Pinnacle West Capital's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 0.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 68%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.
Pinnacle West Capital Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was $2.27, compared to the most recent full-year payment of $3.52. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.5% a year over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Earnings have grown at around 4.0% a year for the past five years, which isn't massive but still better than seeing them shrink. The company has been growing at a pretty soft 4.0% per annum, and is paying out quite a lot of its earnings to shareholders. While this isn't necessarily a negative, it definitely signals that dividend growth could be constrained in the future unless earnings start to pick up again.
Our Thoughts On Pinnacle West Capital's Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Pinnacle West Capital will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
