OGE Energy (NYSE:OGE) Is Increasing Its Dividend To $0.425

Simply Wall St

OGE Energy Corp. (NYSE:OGE) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 31st of October to $0.425, which will be 0.9% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of $0.421. This takes the annual payment to 3.7% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

OGE Energy's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue. Based on the last payment, OGE Energy's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 9.5%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 67%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

OGE Energy Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was $1.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was $1.69. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 5.4% per annum over that time. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. OGE Energy has impressed us by growing EPS at 13% per year over the past five years. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.

Our Thoughts On OGE Energy's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think OGE Energy is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
