Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over DTE Energy Company's (NYSE:DTE) P/E Ratio

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider DTE Energy Company (NYSE:DTE) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 20.5x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times haven't been advantageous for DTE Energy as its earnings have been rising slower than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is DTE Energy's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as DTE Energy's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any earnings per share growth to speak of for the company over the past year. However, a few strong years before that means that it was still able to grow EPS by an impressive 64% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 7.3% per year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 11% each year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's alarming that DTE Energy's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On DTE Energy's P/E

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of DTE Energy's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for DTE Energy (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable) you should be aware of.
